Art in a graveyard

An aerial view of the Good Fortune Pavilion with its striking red trim in Jalan Kerayong, Bukit Seputih. It was built by the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association as a Chinese funeral home and a place to honour those who have passed on.

In the middle, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur, is the Hokkien burial ground. There, the small paths are quiet and birds call to each other from deep within the trees.

Visitors admire the photographs on display at an exhibition inside the pavilion itself, capturing some of the wildlife found in the area.

Another piece of art constructed of fabric, bamboo and pipes hangs from a tree, producing melodic notes whenever the wind blows through. It is called 'Bunyi yang Hilang' or 'The Lost Sound'.

Even this small hut, built as a resting point for those who come to visit the graves, has been hung about with strings of paper birds made out of old envelopes. This simple but effective artwork by Emily Chow Wen Qi is called 'Pigeon Post'.

A dead tree is used to convey a thought-provoking message about the plants that process carbon dioxide in order to provide oxygen for humans and animals. This piece of work is by Hishamuddin Rais.

Hishamuddin stands beside another message about the coexistence of humans and the animals which lose their habitats due to development.

Meanwhile, the iconic skyline of Kuala Lumpur towers in the distance, a testament to humanity and their achievements through the use of technology.

Another artwork made of fabric provides a bright splash of colour against the quiet green.

From above, it is clear how nature has intermingled with the marks of humanity and civilisation.

Ahlan, the artist behind the 'Lost Sound' pieces, sits on the edge of a tombstone under one of his artworks.
