The office of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today refuted reports that the former prime minister had passed away, saying he remains in good health.

“He is in good health along with his family,” it said in a statement, adding that it would take legal action against those who spread fake news.

“We hope the people will check the validity of news with the authorities before spreading it, to prevent confusion.”

A statement on Abdullah’s supposed death had made the rounds on social media this morning, claiming that he had just passed away and expressing condolences to his family.

Abdullah, 81, was prime minister from 2003 to 2009. He was succeeded by Najib Razak.
