Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg today thanked Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin for assuring that his party will not contest the Sarawak state election next month.

Abang Johari, who is chairman of the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition said the pledge showed the good ties from having friendly parties like Bersatu and Barisan Nasional (BN).

“I would also like to thank Annuar Musa for his announcement that BN, too, will not field candidates in the state election.

“This shows that we have a good spirit, especially since we have our representatives in the federal government,” he said when asked to comment on Muhyiddin’s announcement yesterday.

Muhyiddin had said that the decision was out of respect for the wishes of the GPS leadership.

He also said Bersatu had chosen to stay out of the contest because it believed GPS had the ability to win, and that GPS had supported the PN-led federal government when he was the prime minister.

Abang Johari said he believed both Bersatu and BN had chosen to stay out of the contest as they understand and respect the sentiment of the Sarawak people.

“I am sure that they understand the politics of Sarawak,” he said.

“Let the people of Sarawak decide what happens in Sarawak.”
