Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin upped his attack on Umno today, urging voters in Johor to reject Barisan Nasional (BN) at the state election to come over the charges of corruption and abuse of power staring at its leaders.
The former prime minister said several Umno leaders had already been found guilty in court or told to enter their defence.
“Is that not a wrongdoing that can no longer be denied?” he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
In Johor, he said, the religious education system teaches people about right and wrong.
“But when it comes to corruption and abuse of power, the people need to ask themselves if they are ready to associate with groups such as this that are represented by BN,” he said.
While he did not mention names, he was believed to be referring to former prime minister Najib Razak, who has been found guilty of corruption in the SRC International case, and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who has been told to enter his defence for charges of abuse of power.
Muhyiddin said PN’s candidates for the Johor election would take an oath against corruption, as was done for the Melaka polls.
He said the Johor election would be a medium for Malay voters to show their hatred of parties with corrupt leaders who have already been sentenced.
“This cannot be underestimated in terms of values,” he added. “This is not a question of voting rights only. It’s about the good of the country and building it up based on moral and ethical values.”
Muhyiddin said his talks with PAS about the distribution of seats for the Johor polls were complete, although there were some overlaps with Gerakan which he said would likely be resolved tomorrow.
The Election Commission is expected to announce the date of the Johor state election on Feb 9.
Muhyiddin meanwhile said Bersatu would take no action yet against its Supreme Council member Zuraida Kamaruddin who has been linked with Parti Bangsa Malaysia leader, Julau MP Larry Sng.
“She is still a member of the Supreme Council,” he said. “We will provide further updates if there are any developments.”
