Parts of Kuala Lumpur have been hit by flash floods following heavy rain in the capital city this afternoon.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) meanwhile has issued a warning for lightning storms today.

“As of 5pm, Nadma wished to confirm the occurrance of flash floods in several areas around the Klang Valley,” it said in a Facebook post.

The areas affected include Kuchai Lama, Pudu, Bukit Jalil and Ampang.

Nadma also announced that water levels are rising in a number of locations around the city centre including Dang Wangi, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Kia Peng and Jalan Raja Chulan.

Internet users have been sharing pictures and videos of highways covered in water in the affected areas.

Some videos show drivers stranded in their cars, trying to escape the rising water.

Four lanes on the Kesas Highway have been submerged at the Awan Besar west toll plaza, with only one lane accessible at KM48.3 eastbound towards the Sukom junction, according to the Malaysian Highway Board.

The floods have also caused the temporary closure of the SMART Tunnel, involving the entrance from Taman Desa and Cheras towards the city centre and the exit from the city centre heading to Cheras.

The New Pantai Expressway meanwhile said on Twitter that the Kuchai tunnel had been closed since 4.20pm, and advised road users to seek alternative routes.

“The Kuchai tunnel has been closed due to flash floods,” it said.

“Follow the instructions of the personnel on duty as well as the safety signs.”
