Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today announced toll-free rides on the North-South and East Coast Expressways from April 30 to May 1 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
In a statement, he said this would apply to all vehicle classes on these highways.
Toll will also be lifted from May 7 to 8 to allow road users to return from their trips to their home towns.
Meanwhile, Ismail also announced discounts of 30 to 50% for toll on other major highways including the Kesas, LDP and NPE.
Ismail said the decision was made after discussions with 30 highway concessionaires.
The lifting of toll and various discounts will cost a total of RM77.11 million, to be jointly borne by the government and the companies in question.
“With this, it is hoped that Aidilfitri celebrations this year will be more festive together with loved ones,” Ismail said.
He said the decision took into account the impact of the pandemic on the public’s income, adding that it was also to reduce the burden of road users, especially those in the low income bracket.
