UiTM pioneer Arshad Ayub dies

He was a prominent academic who had held various positions in the government, including serving as deputy Bank Negara governor.

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) pioneer Arshad Ayub died early this morning, his family confirmed today. He was 93.

In a statement, they said that Arshad, an academic and a founding director of Institut Teknologi Mara, passed away at 2.06am.

Arshad was born in Muar, Johor, on Nov 15, 1928. He was chairman of the board of directors of Universiti Malaysia and pro-chancellor of UiTM.

He also held various prominent positions in the government, including a two-year stint as deputy governor of Bank Negara Malaysia under Ismail Mohd Ali, from 1975 to 1977.

He was later appointed as secretary-general of the agriculture ministry.

He was admitted to the ICU due to health problems on June 7.
