Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari today said the state government would redevelop Stadium Shah Alam at an estimated cost of RM787 million.

He said the state government had chosen to redevelop the stadium instead of repairing it as this was considered the more worthwhile option based on a technical and financial assessment.

He added that the redevelopment cost of RM700 million was taken as a "new construction" cost as it was nearly twice what it had cost to build the stadium in the first place.

"In our view, technically and financially, it is more worthwhile for us to redevelop," he said at a press conference to hand over a letter of intent to Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) for a detailed proposal on the matter.

Amirudin said MRCB was chosen through a rigorous selection process which saw the participation of 15 other companies, including international firms and public-listed companies.

"MRCB will hold talks with the Selangor government on the development plan for the sports complex and surrounding facilities," he added.

MalaysiaNow recently provided a detailed look at the current condition of Stadium Shah Alam, sparking calls for the state government to act.

Amirudin today said that the decision to redevelop was made after studies conducted since 2013.

"The state government has noted the response of the public on Stadium Shah Alam," he said.

"There are some who want it repaired and restored to its former glory while there are also those who feel that we should rebuild it with modern facilities, thereby giving it a new lease of life.

"All suggestions and views have been studied and will be raised to the developer for further consideration," he said.

Amirudin also said that an exhibition about the sports complex would be held by September so that more people would understand the issues surrounding the development plan.
