Former prime minister Najib Razak waves at the Federal Court in Putrajaya on Aug 23, where his conviction and sentence for the misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC International funds was upheld.

The prison department today said that former prime minister Najib Razak has been referred to the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital (HRC) where he remains for treatment and monitoring.

In a statement, it said the Kuala Lumpur High Court had ordered on Sept 12 that Najib be taken to hospital for checks after being told that his health condition was unsatisfactory.

"In accordance with Section 37 of the Prisons Act and the provisions under the act, as well as the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (Mandela Rules), the prison department sent Najib to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) to be treated by the specialists there," it said.

On Sept 19, it said, HKL referred Najib to HRC.

"Najib will be taken back to Kajang Prison to serve his jail sentence as soon as the specialists at HRC or HKL give him medical clearance," it said.

"As the authority that carries out its responsibilities under the Prison Act, the prison department, in addition to implementing the sentences handed down, is also responsible for ensuring that the health of prisoners is constantly monitored and taken care of, including the provision of treatment facilities and medication as recommended by government medical officers."

Najib began serving a 12-year jail term on Aug 23 after the Federal Court upheld his conviction and sentence for the misappropriation of RM42 million in the SRC International case.

He has been in and out of prison several times since then for check-ups and treatment related to a high blood pressure issue.
