PKR's general election candidates will see prominent incumbents dropped from the line-up and those loyal to party president Anwar Ibrahim retained, as it heads to the polls for the first time since its biggest split two years ago.
The party also confirmed speculation over who will take on former deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali, naming his one-time protege, Selangor Menteri Besar Aminudin Shari, as its candidate in Gombak.
Prominent incumbents who were dropped include Maria Chin Abdullah of Petaling Jaya and R Sivarasa of Sungai Buluh, neither of whom is considered "the president's man".
Also missing from the list is Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua, one of the founding members of PKR who was instrumental in the reformasi movement.
Instead, the party is retaining the 20-something P Prabakaran, who was thrust into PKR after Tian Chua was disqualified from contesting the Batu seat.
Several candidates described by Anwar as "prominent academics and individuals" were also allocated seats which the party has little chance of winning. They include academic Noraishah Mydin, who is being fielded in Putrajaya – long seen as a bastion of Barisan Nasional and which the coalition retained even when it lost federal power in 2018.
Meanwhile, Anwar's wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will be taking on former PKR man Kamaruddin Jaafar in Bandar Tun Razak, while his daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar will defend Permatang Pauh.
