Perikatan Nasional (PN) will continue pushing for the bill to amend the Federal Constitution on citizenship for children born overseas to Malaysian women, if given the mandate to form the federal government after the 15th general election (GE15).

PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said the agenda, which he proposed himself, had been included in the PN manifesto for GE15.

"I have told everyone this issue, (previously) my hands were tied by existing laws under the constitution. It’s not that I don’t sympathise with the issue, I am sympathetic but I can’t do anything.

"That’s why I asked that PN include it as an agenda in the manifesto," he said at a media conference in Muar yesterday.

Hamzah, who is also home minister, was commenting on the similarity between the Barisan Nasional (BN) manifesto and the PN manifesto promising citizenship to children born overseas to Malaysian women.

"I hope everyone, not just BN, but all coalitions, will follow what PN had announced earlier.

"This will show that this issue could have been resolved earlier if everyone had been with me," he said.
