Former Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam today said he was confident that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim would ensure proper justice for Najib Razak who is currently serving a 12-year sentence in prison.
Najib, the former prime minister, was convicted in July 2020 by High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Ghazali of misappropriating RM42 million in SRC International funds.
The decision was upheld by the Court of Appeal and Federal Court, with the apex court sending him to Kajang Prison on Aug 23.
Lokman said the case against Najib leading to his imprisonment appeared to be a conspiracy to persecute the former Umno president, claiming elements of conflict of interest in Nazlan's position as a judge in the SRC International case.
"Najib went to jail because Nazlan was not charged," he told MalaysiaNow.
"His involvement clearly shows a conspiracy and malicious intent to persecute Najib. I am confident now that he will get a proper defence through the submission of new evidence that was previously rejected."
Lokman, representing NGO claiming justice for Najib, had earlier submitted a memorandum to law minister Azalina Othman Said requesting that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission report on Nazlan be reviewed and disclosed to the public.
The memorandum urged the government to take action against Nazlan for allegedly violating the law, including the Penal Code, the MACC Act 2009 and the Code of Ethics for Judges 2009.
"We believe that Najib has been wronged, and that the act of proscuting and punishing him was something planned ahead," he said after submitting the document to Azalina's officer Gan Wen Shen outside the Parliament building.
