The communications and digital ministry will not curb the freedom of media practitioners to report, but they must discharge their duties within the limits of the law, says minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi said it was important for media practitioners to abide by the laws and regulations to avoid spreading fake news and slander.
"Our reminder to all media practitioners and the public is that we do not curb the right of the media to report on anything.
"In terms of constraints, firstly, they have to abide by the licensing conditions and secondly, existing laws in this country," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.
It was recently reported that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had opened an investigation paper against local television station Awesome TV over a breach of licensing regulations in connection with a news report deemed as fake.
