Kelantan to dissolve state assembly on June 22

The Kelantan state legislative assembly will be dissolved on June 22 to pave the way for the state election, Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob said.

He said the dissolution of the state assembly has received the consent of the Sultan of Kelantan Sultan Muhammad V.

"Today, I want to declare the dissolution of the 14th state assembly. This is after I was granted an audience with the sultan to seek consent for the dissolution of the state assembly in accordance with Clause 2 Article 46 of the state constitution.

"The sultan gave his consent for the state assembly to be dissolved on June 22," he told a press conference after the state executive council meeting in Kota Bharu today.

He said the state government would send the notice of dissolution of the state assembly to the Election Commission for further action.

Three states under Pakatan Harapan, namely Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan, and three under Perikatan Nasional – Terengganu, Kedah and Kelantan – did not dissolve their respective state assemblies by the time the 15th general election was held in November last year.

Leaders of the states, however, agreed to do so within the last two weeks of June to enable state elections to be held simultaneously in the six states.

Penang has already announced that its state assembly will dissolve on June 28, while Negeri Sembilan is expected to do so on June 30.
