An aide to Anwar Ibrahim's political secretary has posted a "prayer" for the death of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and former leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in a sign of the campaign for the upcoming state elections taking on a nasty tone.
Ahmad Zaki Yamani, an aide to Anwar's political secretary Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, posted the prayer on Twitter, responding to a news report on Hadi's health condition.
"Oh Allah! Take the life of Abdul Hadi Awang. Stop the damage he is doing on the face of the earth. Stop the slander he brings against Your religion. P/S: Take Mahathir too," Zaki wrote.
[Editor's note: Zaki has since slammed MalaysiaNow over the report, saying the portal is known for spreading slander.
"I am not an aide to any political secretary to the PM," he said.]
Zaki, an exco member of PKR Youth when Shamsul was leading the wing, remained defiant when several users questioned his post, telling them to cite him Islamic texts prohibiting someone from praying for the death of others.
When told that there was nothing to justify his behaviour, Zaki responded that Hadi's demise would put a stop to his political arguments.
"Will Hadi's continued life bring benefit to the people?" he asked.
Hadi, 75, was admitted to hospital after his health deteriorated last week.
"Father's health slightly worsened before Hari Raya Aidiladha and he is being monitored by doctors at hospital," his son Muhammad Khalil said in a Facebook post today.
In 2017, the PAS leader, who is also the Marang MP, underwent a heart valve replacement surgery at the National Heart Institute.
