History will be kind to Abdullah
A tribute to a person who retained his integrity, honesty, compassion and humanity.

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was a unique leader.
In spite of a long career in politics, including six years as prime minister, Abdullah retained his integrity, his honesty, his compassion and his humanity.
It is these qualities of his that endeared him to the people especially in the early years of his prime ministership. It explains to some extent his massive victory in the 11th general election. Barisan Nasional's victory in 2004 remains the most impressive parliamentary triumph achieved by the coalition to this day.
Abdullah was perceived at that time by all sections of society as a clean, upright leader committed to good governance that prioritised the people.
In order to curb corruption, he institutionalised the declaration of assets and liabilities by elected public officials and established the Institute of Integrity Malaysia (IIM) to strengthen public awareness of the evil of corruption.
He also sought to decentralise development by creating corridors in different geographical areas of the country. Given his civil service background, he also attempted to give a push to competence and efficiency in public administration.
Abdullah's approach to governance was essentially consultative. There was greater latitude for dialogue and diversity under his leadership which was evident in his role in formulating the National Development Policy which replaced the NEP and in some other policies associated with him.
Apart from development and democratic participation, national unity was also close to his heart. For him the values which transcended ethnic and religious boundaries such as compassion and kindness were paramount.
It is these values which define the human being and he could see how they brought people of different backgrounds together in a multi-religious society. His concept of "Islam Hadhari" (Civilisational Islam) was intimately linked to this view of a religion where fundamental values took precedence over form and ritual. Abdullah promoted Islam Hadhari not only in the domestic arena but also in international relations.
Of course, like all political leaders there were pluses and minuses in the various roles that Abdullah played in society. But all said and done, history will be kind to this gentle and humane soul who has left an indelible mark upon the nation.
