Australia closed its international borders and locked down cities among other restrictions that helped keep infections and deaths far below levels in other comparable developed economies such as the US and Britain.

Computer algorithms for the scheme wrongly calculated that hundreds of thousands of Australians owed money and with little to no human oversight it recovered US$1.17 billion.
