The daughter of Myanmar's independence hero was first put under house arrest in 1989 after huge protests against decades of military rule.

Suu Kyi has been seen only once since she was held after the Feb 1, 2021 putsch – in grainy state media photos from a bare courtroom in the military-built capital Naypyidaw.

The hugely popular Nobel laureate Suu Kyi is among scores of members jailed since the coup and is serving 33 years for multiple counts of corruption, a breach of a state secrets law and incitement, among other crimes.

The verdict adds to sentences of at least 26 years handed down since December last year.

Suu Kyi has been on trial for more than a year on multiple charges, ranging from corruption and incitement to leaks of official secrets, for which the combined maximum sentences are more than 190 years.

The Nobel laureate and figurehead of Myanmar's opposition to decades of military rule has been detained since a coup early last year and has already been sentenced to more than 17 years in prison.

Suu Kyi has called the accusations absurd and denies all charges against her.

Since her ouster in a coup last year, Suu Kyi had been under house arrest at an undisclosed location in Naypyidaw, accompanied by several domestic staff and her dog, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.

The latest case centred on allegations that Suu Kyi, accepted 11.4kg of gold and cash payments totalling US$600,000 from her protege-turned-accuser, former chief minister of the city of Yangon, Phyo Min Thein.

The Nobel laureate has been detained since Feb 1 when her government was forced out in an early morning coup, ending Myanmar's short-lived experiment with democracy.

The junta has added a slew of other indictments, including violating the official secrets act, corruption and electoral fraud.

The doctor who treated the patients says one was hit in the thigh, another in the abdomen and a third in the chest.
