Hundreds of protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad in July and set it on fire over a planned Quran burning in Stockholm.

The Swedish government is also looking into changes that could allow police to stop Quran burnings in public if they posed a threat to national security.

The countries have deplored the burnings of the Quran but cannot prevent it under constitutional laws protecting freedom of speech.

According to the Swedish news agency TT, the man has a temporary residency permit in Sweden that is set to expire in 2024.

Sweden's bid to join Nato has put it in the international spotlight, while a number of demonstrations at which protesters have burned copies of the Quran have angered Muslims around the world.

Sweden's laws, current politics and social traditions mean such incidents are unlikely to be halted any time soon.

An Iraqi government statement said Baghdad had also recalled its charge d'affaires in Sweden, and Iraq's state news agency reported that Iraq had suspended the working permit of Sweden's Ericsson on Iraqi soil.

A source familiar with the matter says no embassy staff have been harmed and declined to elaborate further.

Ahmad A says his aim was not to burn the holy books but to criticise the people who have burnt Qurans in Sweden in recent months.

The controversial protest comes weeks after a man set fire to pages of the Quran outside Stockholm's main mosque.

Sweden and Finland applied to join Nato last year, casting aside policies of military non-alignment that had lasted through the decades of the Cold War as Russia's invasion of Ukraine reframed security considerations.

Sweden's bid must still be approved by the Turkish parliament, and Erdogan has agreed to push for its ratification.
