US-brokered peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians broke down in 2014 and relations between the two sides have plummeted amid a tide of violence.

Israel has been stepping up military operations against armed groups in the occupied West Bank, where the Palestinian Authority has limited autonomy.

The raid targeted the northern city of Jenin and was the biggest in the West Bank for years, featuring armoured vehicles, army bulldozers and drones.

Israel's military says it hit a command centre for militant fighters in the West Bank city of Jenin.

This reverses a move made under Donald Trump that rejected the wide international consensus that Israel illegally occupies the West Bank, which it seized in the 1967 Six-Day War.

So far this year, violence linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has killed at least 176 Palestinians, 25 Israelis, a Ukrainian and an Italian.

An army spokesman says troops tried to prevent Israelis from attacking Turmus Ayya but were stretched too thin.

The strike is the first in the West Bank by the Israelis since August 2006, according to a Palestinian intelligence source.

Israel has peppered the West Bank with settlements that most world powers view as illegal.

At least 91 others have been wounded.

The plans for approval of 4560 housing units in the West Bank were included on the agenda, although only 1,332 are up for final approval, with the remainder still going through the preliminary clearance process.

The latest development comes weeks after the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged his government had no plans to reconstruct the site.
